Email Scams

Phishing attacks may take on a variety of different forms. In the classic “phishing” attack, a virtual trap is set by cyber thieves that use official-looking emails to lure you to fake websites and trick you into revealing your nonpublic information. Another form of "phishing" is when you receive an official-looking email and are requested to click on a link to download a file or report. Once you click the link, malicious software called “malware” is instantly installed on your PC.

Here are some best practices for online security which are outlined below:

  1. Do not open emails from which you do not recognize the sender.
  2. Remember that Amalgamated Foundation will never send you an email with a link asking you to update your nonpublic information.
  3. Do not click on any hyperlinks within an email.
  4. Do not share your security credentials with others.

Contact us as soon as you can if you are receiving suspicious emails purportedly coming from Amalgamated Foundation.

Online Job Scams

Amalgamated Bank and Amalgamated Foundation do not conduct job interviews via public instant messaging platforms or chat rooms. If you have been contacted to participate in an online interview and the interview involves public instant messaging platforms or chat rooms, or if you have been contacted by an individual using an email domain that does not appear valid, the communication is not legitimate. In order to be considered for a job opportunity with Amalgamated Foundation, you must first complete an online application via Amalgamated Foundation Careers. If you haven’t filled out a job application and are being interviewed or receive a job offer, please do not proceed, as the purported process is not legitimate.

These scams usually have one of more of the following characteristics:

  • The perpetrator will not speak directly with you; all communication is done via email or chat.
  • They attempt first contact via email from a public domain (gmail.com for example), a legitimate company’s email domain (@company.com) or a text message.
  • They attempt to perform an online interview via common web services such as Google hangouts.
  • They may impersonate Amalgamated Foundation or Amalgamated Bank individuals during the process.
  • They may send a check (which is fraudulent) and ask for the funds to be deposited and wired to another location for the purchase of home office equipment. The check is not issued by Amalgamated Foundation or Amalgamated Bank.
  • They may use the Amalgamated Bank or Amalgamated Foundation logo in the process.
  • If you have been contacted under these circumstances, please report the activity to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, which is a partnership among the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BIA), at https://www.ic3.gov/.

If you have any concerns about a job posting or interaction you have received, please contact us at donorservices@amalgamatedfoundation.org.
